| "This paper illustrates the research activities carried out in a typhoon triggered landslide in the Ui District of the town of Otomura in Nara Prefecture (Japan). These investigations are developed in the framework of the cooperation between the Japanese Public Works Research Institute and the Italian Geo-Risk Joint Lab of the Naional Research Council. In late January 2004 in the Ui District, slope instability evidences appeared on a retaining wall protecting the National Highway No.168; this road plays an important role as a long distance route for passenger vehicles and trucks between the large urban region and the south part of the Ise Peninsula. Heavy rainfalls due to Typhoon No.6 in late June caused an increasing in landslide activity. From late July to early August, two new typhoons (No.10 and No.11) hit the area taking the landslide to collapse on 10th of August. Field and aerial survey of the site have been carried out immediately after the beginning of landslide movements in response to a request from Nara prefecture, and a monitoring system was immediately setted up. This paper summarizes the results of the field surveys and the monitoring activities carried out under the supervision of the Gojo Public Works Office." |
