"The Pursat River Basin (Basin Area: 6,013 km2) is located at the south west of the Tonle Sap Lake which is the the largest freshwater lake on the Indochina Peninsula. The Tonle Sap Lake is located roughly at the center of Cambodia and the Pursat River Basin is one of the surrounding river basins of Tonle Sap Lake. The climate of this area is characterized by clearly defined dry and wet seasons. Most of the rain concentrates on wet season and little rain falls in dry season. Because of this unique charasterstics of precipitation, it seems that the runoff system is also unique in the Pursat River Basin. In addition to that, to understand the runoff charasteristics of the Pursat River Basin is very important because the water volume balance of the Tonle Sap Lake depends on the runoff volume of its surrounding basins including the Pursat River Basin. However, hydrological data needed to understand the hydrological features of the Pursat River is very limited. So the runoff charasteristics of area remains unclear. To understand the runoff charasteristics of a basin, a distributed hydrological model is helpful. In this paper, a distributed hydrological model (PWRI Distributed Model) was applied to the Pursat River Basin. In order to deal with the lack of rainfall data, satellite-based global precipitation data named 3B42 or CMORPH which are developed by NASA or NOAA were input to the model as precipitation data. Although some uncertainties still remain, the result of the simulation showed high applicability."
