| This study revealed several characteristics and causative factors that were possibly responsible for the occurrence of landslides triggered by the Mid-Niigata Prefecture earthquake. Within a geomorphological context, landslides tended to occur within pre-existing landslide topographies; 73% of the total 96 earthquake-induced landslides occurred within pre-existing landslide sites. Several factors are considered to be responsible for the occurrence of landslide, (1) longitudinal convexity; (2) largest erosion depth; (3) lower part inclination. Within a geological context, earthquake-induced landslides tended to occur in sandstone areas, alternation of sandstone-mudstone areas compared to the mudstone distribution areas. Structurally, 51% of earthquake-induced landslides occurred on dip slopes, while only 7% on reverse-dip slopes. |
