| Although artificial and temporary area of water, paddy fields hold importance as a habitat for river fish in Japan. In recent years, modernization of water management has led to greater division between rivers and paddy fields. Only steep drainage channels, with irregular flow, connect both areas in many paddy fields. In early spring, large amount of water is required for the planting of rice in paddy fields, therefore only shallow current can be utilized as a route of migration for the fish in the rivers. The V shaped corner baffle was designed to easily decelerate the flow in steep channels. It is similar to a halved Denil fishway in appearance. Regular V-shaped baffles are supported on an anchor plate and then simply fixed on a corner of the channel. The opposite corner is left as is, so as not be isolated from the flow of channels. Furthermore, this flow is usually of high velocity and will effectively flush out any rubbish from the upstream area. This study explains the hydraulics of the fishway, and show the basic design. |
