The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical degradation of weathering steel with a naturally simulated rust layer by exposing it in a severe corrosive environment in Okinawa (Japan). Surface roughness of steel caused by corrosion on weathering steel varies with exposure time and rust thickness development. The effect of time-variant roughness on steel surface caused by corrosion on the strength and deformation of corroded weathering steel is identified by using the Digital Image Correction (DIC) method while conducting uniaxial tensile testing. The initiation and propagation of a local crack at the critical pit indicates the loss of load bearing area of steel surface causes the degradation of mechanical properties of steel. Fracture elongations of steel after corrosion at different exposure periods represent the reduction in ductility of weathering steel after corrosion. |
