Structural reinforcement with CFRP sheets is a widely used method for strengthening concrete structures such as girders, decks and piers. While the efficiency of this method is well documented, there are still questions about its long term durability. Most of the original studies on the long-term behaviour of CFRP have been done for aircraft or marine structures. However, many conditions such as materials for these applications, environmental factors and expected life time are different than those in structural civil engineering. The authors carried out a series of exposure tests under natural climates conditions for CFRP sheets in three characteristic locations in the world, Sherbrooke (Canada), Tsukuba (mainland Japan) and Oogimi (Okinawa). The natural exposure tests were continued for ten years and the mechanical properties of the specimens from the three locations, such as tensile strength and in-plane shear, were evaluated at regular interval. Although the results showed a slight decrease in mechanical properties over the exposure period, the tested materials exhibit properties that still allow their use after ten years. |
