To identify the mechanisms of the bearing and failure of steel bars embedded in concrete subjected to transverse load, static loading tests using 24 concrete blocks containing dowel bars, bolted platemounted bars, or welded studs were conducted. The behavior up to failure is examined based on the results obtained from the tests and analysis using the traditional beam on elastic foundation analogy. This paper describes the post-yield behavior of dowel bars and welded studs involving the spalling of concrete under the bars and the plastic hinge of the bars. The elastic analogy provides further interesting implications to illustrate the behavior of the bars in concrete, even beyond yielding. |
