By using wild-animal ATS, it is possible to track animal movement patterns (and infer behavior) accurately and continuously with a distance error of approximately 30 m. This method allowed us to track the movement patterns of a weasel for 2 weeks during the downstream-migration period. We subsequently modeled weasel behavior, and verified model accuracy. We found that the average home range of the weasel was approximately 25 ha, and that it mainly inhabited areas of open land and low vegetation density, with the model developed here accurately representing its behavioral characteristics. The results indicate that the use of behavioral data obtained from wild-animal ATSs is effective for developing accurate behavioral models, such as the model developed in this study. |
