In this study, we researched corrosion protection performance and painting workability of water-based paints to apply them to steel highway bridge coatings in order to reduce the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission. Performance evaluation tests, accelerated deterioration tests, outdoor exposure tests, workability tests, etc. were carried out for those paints and the VOC reduction effect with each paint was assessed. Main results are as follows. (1) Most of water-based paints evaluated in this study have good corrosion protection performance and film durability equivalent to that of conventional solvent-based paints. (2) Although water-based based paints are easily influenced by ambient temperature and humidity compared with solvent-based paints, they demonstrate good performance almost same as solvent-based paints if appropriately painted. (3) The amount of VOCs use in painting operation for a water-based coating system is 10-30% of a solvent-based coating system. |
