In this important and very difficult to reasonably calculate the landslide stability in reservoir area because dam reservoir impoundment changes the geological environment and brings about landslide hazards. The stability calculation methods and the input parameter of landslide in reservoir area in Japan and China are firstly introduced. A simplified Fellenius method is used in Japan, while a transfer coefficient method is widely used in China. In order to calculate the underwater seepage force, a concept of residual pore pressure is employed based on the investigation of pore pressure in Japan. As an example, the stabilities of landslide in dam reservoir are calculated and analyzed by the two methods. It is found that both of them are comparable and give the same trend of the safety factor against the water level. It is suggested that the residual pore pressure method is an easy way to determine and calculate the phreatic line of groundwater.
