| This paper presents technical developments for seismic design and seismic retrofit of bridges in Japan. The damage caused by the 1995 Hyogo‐ken nanbu (Kobe) earthquake and the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake, and the lessons learned from the earthquakes are described. The continuous challenge to improve the earthquake resilience of bridges and to revise and upgrade Seismic Design Specifications for Bridges based on the lessons are described. |
