The ecological effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments have become a matter of concern. In the present study, we conducted initial ecological risk assessments of 10 PPCPs in the middle stream of the Tama River and its tributaries using the hazard quotient. We also conducted an algal growth inhibition test of river water samples using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata to evaluate the toxicity of each sample and contributions of PPCPs on the toxicity of the water sample to the algal species. Initial ecological risk assessment showed the potential ecological risks of 5 PPCPs. No adverse effects on P. subcapiata were observed in all water samples. Although they can contribute largely to the entire toxicity of the water sample on the growth of P. subcapiata in the middle basin of the Tama River, effects of the PPCPs on algal growth may be low. |
